Unfortunately, this films seems to reflect a Scorsese who is aging, or perhaps the fault lies with the freedom that Netflix gave him, when a lot of editing could have been done to tighten this film up. Disappointing by Scorsese standards First off, let me set this straight that Im not repel by long or slow films. While it may not prove to be one of Fengs biggest hits, some of which have set local admissions records, Only Cloud Knows is sure to perform well with mature domestic audiences while its idyllic vision of rural overseas life could lure a millennial crowd seeking a cinematic respite from Chinas hustle and bustle. Receiving a day-and-date international release from China Lion, the film could be warmly embraced by the disaspora, particularly throughout Australasia given it is based around an Auckland-based expatriate Sui Dongfeng (Huang Xuan) first seen as he comes to terms with the recent passing of his beloved wife, Luo Yun (Yang Caiyu. Fulfilling her request that her ashes be divided and left in four places of deep personal significance, he sets off on a journey that spans New Zealand and China. The first stop is Clyde, a rural town where the couple lived for fifteen years, with the road trip prompting the first of several extended flashbacks. We learn that they had relocated from the city to open a Chinese restaurant and settled comfortably into the local community, becoming close friends with waitress Melinda (Lydia Peckham) whose enthusiastic personality ensures plenty of repeat business. Over the years, they weather their share of setbacks, with the passing of time marked by advertisements for the restaurants annual anniversary specials. At one point, Yun asks Dongfeng if he would ever consider living somewhere else. He seems to think they already have the perfect life, but she is quietly harboring frustrations beneath a fairly contented surface. As a take on the Chinese diaspora, Feng doesnt shy away from some of the difficulties, and occasional prejudices, posed by overseas living but largely portrays cultural assimilation as a smooth process through the shared experiences of an appealing couple. Although less wry than the directors usual male protagonists, Dongfeng is another practical type who sees the world as it is (��The mouth is king, if you cant fill it, who cares what your eyes and ears want? ��) but cheerfully tries to make the best of every situation. Like previous Feng heroines, Yun wrestles with her agency, occasionally demonstrating an independent, determinist streak yet ultimately conforming to a traditional role. Huang and Yang, both of whom starred in Youth, soon establish a tender rhythm. Feng and cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding take full advantage of New Zealands scenic splendor, lovingly portraying small town life in bright or earthy tones, with plenty of landscape shots to accentuate the peacefulness. Within the context of mainstream crowd-pleasers, Feng has taken on the mantle of ecological crusader, emphasising the ravishing vistas of Hainan Island in If You Are the One 2 (2010) and using the coda of Personal Tailor to make a plea to save Chinas natural environment before its too late. While his previous statements have been arguably undermined by their association with Chinas booming leisure culture (protagonists were wealthy tourists or business travellers) the couple here is less well-heeled. Scenes depicting such wonders as the beauty of the Southern Lights and whale watching at Kaikoura transcend postcard territory to convey an everyday yearning for a glimpse of the extraordinary. Given that Chinas romantic dramas have a propensity for outright melodrama, often through tragic twists, its refreshing that Zhang Lings screenplay is so resolutely low-key. Based upon the true story of one of the director’s friends, Only Cloud Knows follows distraught widower Sui ‘Simon’ Dongfeng (Xuan Huang) as he recounts a life spent loving his late wife Luo ‘Jennifer’ Yun (Caiya Yang) across both islands of Aoteoroa. The diaspora experience has been a central theme of many of Feng’s works, dating back to his directorial debut, the TV series A Native of Beijing in New York (1993); others include the LA-set rom-com Be There or Be Square (1998) and If You Are The One (2008), featuring Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido. Working from a script penned by acclaimed author Ling Zhang, the narrative is split in three distinct acts. The first hour covers those happy days spent by the lovers in the Otago township of Clyde, making enough of a living from the small berg’s only Chinese restaurant while coping with an increasing number of existential tragedies (not least of which is an extended sequence in which the pair weep tears for days as they cope with their old dog’s particularly painful passing). The second hour recalls the earliest days of their romance in late 1990s Auckland, when Simon had a mullet and played the flute, Jennifer thought herself unfit for marriage only to be won over by his persistence and some spontaneous gambling sets them up for life together. The final passage relentlessly pulls at the heartstrings, with the cancer-riddled Jennifer being held in her final hours by a distraught Simon (all of which he recounts to a very patient charter boat captain, who responds appropriately by taking a big swig from his hip flask). Support players liven up the occasionally heavyhanded scenes between the lovebirds, notably the terrific Lydia Peckham as waitress-turned-bestie Melinda and renowned Chinese actress Xun Fan as landlady Ms Lin, whose own sad memories supply a rewarding subtext. Shot through the prism of grief and memory, Oscar-nominated DOP Zhao Xiaoding (House of Flying Daggers, 2004; Children of The Silk Road, 2008; The Great Wall, 2016) borrows a rich, primary-colour palette from the master of grand weepies, Douglas Sirk; plot wise, the other clear inspiration is Arthur Hiller’s Love Story (1970). Those not in tune with the ripe pleasures to be had from time-shifting romantic tragedies will struggle to make the final handkerchief-filling scenes; if The Notebook, The Lakehouse and/or Somewhere in Time are kept in a drawer under your television, Only Cloud Knows is for you.  Despite the cast and crew’s best efforts, the true on-screen stars are the green fields, rugged mountains and autumnal shades of The Land of The Long White Cloud; shepherded into life with the aid of The New Zealand Film Commission, the dreamy drama represents another international co-production triumph for the progressive local sector.
